Looking for a Summer BJJ Gi?
Looking for a Summer BJJ Gi?
It is officially summer, and if you’re anywhere north of the equator, you’re already feeling the heat. Maybe you train at a nice, bougie Jiu-Jitsu academy that actually has air conditioning… if that’s the case, this blog might not be for you. For the rest of you poor schmucks – don’t worry you’re in good company – keep reading.
As temperatures rise outside, it’s also getting a little warm on the mat. Everything and everyone is a little bit sweatier, everyone is breathing a little bit harder, and that trusty mid-weight gi of yours feels just a little bit heavier. Yes, summer is officially here. Which means it’s time to break out the summer BJJ gis.
What? You don’t have a “summer gi”? Well, odds are you already do, but you just don’t call it that. What makes a summer gi is the weight of the materials used. A jiu-jitsu gi jacket can range from 350 GSM (grams per square meter) all the way up to 1000 GSM, which is a veritable tank of a gi and more common in judo, although not unheard of in the jiu-jitsu realm. A pearl weave jacket is pretty standard, though you'll see variations like the "micro pearl weave" and the "high-tech pearl weave." Pant weights range from 8oz to 14 oz cotton, or 270 to about 380 ripstop (which can be 100% cotton or a polyester/cotton blend). Of course, summer gis sit toward the bottom end of those ranges.
